Mitsubishi Corporation and Amogy have established a strategic partnership to focus on ammonia cracking technology in large-scale hydrogen carrier applications.

Initially focusing on east Asia, and in particular Japan and South Korea, the joint study will commence this month (December) with SK Innovation. It will assess a large-scale deployment of Amogy’s technology.

The deployment will include analysis of costs across the value chain and explore opportunities for market expansion across the ammonia and hydrogen supply chain. Once completed, the three companies will look to explore joint pilot opportunities in the strategic regions.

Amogy’s technology combines ammonia cracking and hydrogen fuel cell power generation into a single system. This enables streamlined and efficient use of ammonia, and, in addition, it will have high potential to be utilised as a hydrogen carrier in large-scale transportation.

Both Japan and South Korea have identified ammonia as an attractive and commercially viable hydrogen carrier and plan to use it to decarbonise power generation, industrial heat generation, and maritime shipping the the future.

Japan plans to utilise three million metric tonnes per year of ammonia as fuel by 2030, while South Korea targets hydrogen and ammonia meeting 7.1% of the country’s power demand by 2036.
