Storage advance may boost solar thermal energy potential
Engineers have identified a new approach for the storage of concentrated solar thermal energy, to reduce its cost and make it more practical for wider use.

On a recent visit to the White House, famous person Cara Delevingne left a message for one of its would-be inhabitants on her Instagram. Let's see how you feel about climate change in 10 years Mr Trump! It is painfully real. Also, can Donald Trump do this???? #itrumptrump #ichallengetrump #climatechangeexistsfool A photo posted by Cara Delevingne (@caradelevingne) on Jan 20, 2016 at 4:47pm PST “Let’s see how you feel about climate change in 10 years Mr Trump!” Delevingne captioned the photo, which showed the supermodel impersonating a crow (?) somewhere in the White House. “It is painfully real,” she continued. Delevingne also included the hashtags “#itrumptrump,” “#ichallengetrump” and “#climatechangeexistsfool.” And for those of you who don’t speak…
Renewable energy can be stored for less with a new organic aqueous flow battery, which uses inexpensive and readily available materials. The new battery is expected to cost about 60 percent less than today’s standard flow batteries.
Lithium-air batteries hold the promise of storing electricity at up to five times the energy density of today’s familiar lithium-ion batteries, but they have inherent shortcomings. Researchers have helped prove that a new prototype is powered by a surprising chemical reaction that may solve the new battery’s biggest drawback.
Success of the energy turnaround will depend decisively on the extended use of renewable energy sources. However, their efficiency partly is much smaller than that of conventional energy sources. The efficiency of commercially available photovoltaic cells, for instance, is about 20 percent. Scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have now published an unconventional approach to increasing the efficiency of the panels. Optical invisibility cloaks guide sunlight around objects that cast shadows on the solar panel.
The administration announced the action Friday as it considers an overhaul of the program that could lead to increased costs for energy companies and deter future extractions.
Numerous bats are killed by German wind turbines. The number of such turbines, already very high, is planned to be increased further. More than two-thirds of bats being killed by wind turbines on German ground are migrants on their way between summer and winter habitats. Due to its geographical location in Europe, Germany has consequently a central responsibility for the conservation of migratory bats.
