Tandem solar cells are simply better

Stacking two solar cells one over the other has advantages: Because the energy is ‘harvested’ in two stages, and overall the sunlight can be converted to electricity more efficiently. Researchers have come up with a procedure that makes it possible to produce thin film tandem solar cells in which a thin perovskite layer is used. The processing of perovskite takes place at just 50 degrees Celsius and such a process is potentially applicable for low cost roll-to-roll production in future.

Large-scale hydroelectric dam in Yukon would be a major environmental concern

A new report warns of the potential for major negative impacts on fish and fish habitat caused by large hydroelectric dams, like that currently under evaluation through the Next Generation Hydro initiative. The report, which focuses on north-western Canada, notes that substantial destruction of fish habitats caused by such a dam, along with additional threats and effects will be either very expensive or impossible to mitigate.

Victoria’s ambitious new roadmap for renewables

The Victorian State Government released a renewable energy roadmap in the middle of 2015, and ran a submission process to define the way forward. Among several interesting new initiatives is a renewable energy purchase equivalent to around 100 MW of wind energy. A tender should be announced shortly. The Clean Energy Council attended meetings and workshops and produced a written submission which you can view online. Women in RenewablesThe Clean Energy Council’s successful Women in Renewables initiative continued in late 2015 with the second lunch event held in October as part of the All-Energy Exhibition and Conference in Melbourne. The event provided the opportunity to network and discuss ways for women at all levels in the renewable energy sector to build their profiles. The event was open to all …
