How to convert US to 100 percent renewable energy

It’s technically possible for each state to replace fossil fuel energy with entirely clean, renewable energy, experts say. A new report is the first to outline how each of the 50 states can achieve such a transition by 2050. The 50 individual state plans call for aggressive changes to both infrastructure and the ways we currently consume energy, but indicate that the conversion is technically and economically possible through the wide-scale implementation of existing technologies.

Air Canada backs project to build biofuels supply chain for airports

An earlier version was originally published in the Toronto Star. Canada’s aviation sector made history in 2012 after a number of test flights showed that renewable jet fuel could be blended with regular fuel without affecting airplane performance. It started in April, when Porter Airlines used a blend of 50 per cent “biojet” fuel on a Bombardier turboprop, which successfully flew from the Toronto island airport to Ottawa. Two months later, Air Canada flight AC991 carried passengers from Toronto to Mexico City using a similar 50/50 mix. It was the first of two commercial test flights Air Canada conducted that year. “We took 43 per cent of the carbon out of that flight,” said Teresa Ehman, the airline’s director of environmental affairs. “It was phenomenal. But it raised the next…

Synthetic batteries for the energy revolution

A team of researchers made a decisive step towards a redox-flow battery which is simple to handle, safe and economical at the same time: They developed a system on the basis of organic polymers and a harmless saline solution. The new redox-flow battery can withstand up to 10,000 charging cycles without losing a crucial amount of capacity.

EPA and religious groups team up to fight food waste

Quiz time! When it comes to America’s food waste problem, WWJD? Would he: A) “Save” that questionable block of cheese, B) Turn wine back into water, or C) Start an interfaith effort to reduce the amount of food headed to the dump? Who knows? Food waste is a complicated problem. But here’s something that may surprise you: The Environmental Protection Agency is pulling their own version of option C, and it’s called the Food Steward’s Pledge — “an initiative to engage religious groups of all faiths to help redirect the food that ends up in landfills to hungry mouths,” according to NPR. The EPA’s effort to bring religious zeal to our nation’s food squandering problem is one way to approach…

Koch brother resigns from museum board after calls from scientists

For 23 years, David Koch, the billionaire industrialist who made a fortune off fossil fuels, ranching, fertilizers, and other environmental nightmares, has served on the board at the American Museum of Natural History. Koch’s position on the board is controversial, not least because of his position on climate change: The Koch family has spent millions funding climate change denier groups and disinformation campaigns, and scientists around the country have called for Koch to be removed from the museum board. Well, they finally got what they wanted — the American Museum of Natural History announced Koch’s resignation this week. A museum spokeswoman said Koch’s departure is unrelated to the calls for his dismissal, but, as The New York Times reports, a letter sent to museums of…
