Solaris will deliver a total of 26 Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen-powered buses to its German customer REVG Kerpen in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The sustainable bus manufacturer has already delivered the first two units to Kerpen, with the remaining vehicles set to be delivered in 2025.

Each bus will be equipped with a 70kW hydrogen fuel cell provided by Ballard Power Systems, that will generate electrical energy onboard and be powered by central electric motors.

H2 View understands that Solaris is the largest hydrogen bus manufacturer in Europe, capturing 44.5% of the market share in 2023 alone. Hydrogen-powered buses have already been deployed in German locations, such as Cologne, Frankfurt and the Munich Metropolitan area, with further contracts in progress for Krefeld, Hamburg and Duisburg.

“REVG Kerpen’s choice underlines their commitment to pioneering sustainable transport solutions,” explained Christian Goll, Managing Director of Solaris Germany. “Together, we are on a journey towards a greener future, driven by innovation and environmental responsibility.”

Last week (August 5), RWE and Westfalen Group announced they would develop a hydrogen refuelling station at the Emsland gas-fired power plant, serving customers in the Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia region.

Set to provide up to 500kg of hydrogen per day to tanks, passenger and utility vehicles from 2025, the station will source its green hydrogen from RWE’s 14MW electrolyser in Lingen.
