The development and uptake of decentralised polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser technology can support the lack of hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) across Europe, according to IMI Critical Engineering.
IMI’s Vivo PEM electrolyser, which produces green hydrogen from renewable sources such as solar and wind, is designed for organisations with 100kW to 5MW power demands.

The company has highlighted the importance of decentralised solutions that produce green hydrogen on-site at logistics and transportation firm depots.
Jackie Hu, Divisional Managing Director for IMI Critical Engineering, said, “Transitioning HGVs to sustainable fuels will be crucial to ensuring the UK and Europe’s logistics and transportation industries hit key emission and decarbonisation targets.”
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) urged the UK Government to lay out plans for HGV hydrogen refuelling stations and claimed decarbonisation is “impossible” for most operators without public investment in infrastructure.
Hu said, “The SMMT is right to voice its concerns about a lack of hydrogen refilling stations, which is being echoed in other European markets. However, regardless of insufficient infrastructure, immediate solutions must be found to ensure the sector can make the changes as smoothly as possible.
“As regulations become stricter in the UK and Europe, businesses must adopt greener practices,” he added. “IMI Critical Engineering can help by providing low-pressure hydrogen storage technology and smaller electrolysers. This partnership can give proactive organisations a competitive advantage by securing their hydrogen supply and lead the way towards a better world.”
Last year, IMI Remosa opened its new Sardinia factory, designed to produce its PEM hydrogen electrolyser. IMI states its electrolyser can be adapted to customer specifications and includes a fuel cell and storage system as standard.
